Breakfast for weight loss, will I gain weight if I don’t eat breakfast? (plus my favorite breakfast meals)

We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day especially if you are trying to lose weight, but that doesn’t mean eat just anything for breakfast because it is the most important meal of the day.

As a matter of fact, some studies have shown that there is no direct correlation between eating breakfast and losing weight. Some studies believe that if you eat a healthy breakfast it helps boost your metabolism and helps curb the hunger you feel at lunch time thereby helping to consume less calories at lunchtime.

The reason I promote the need to have a healthy breakfast is not exactly for the reason that it will make you drop 10 pounds, but because eating breakfast for me helps pump my mood for the day.

If I’m very hungry in the morning, I will feel grumpy and apart from being grumpy I will just feel not so energized to do anything. Now this doesn’t mean I feel this way every day or that I eat breakfast everyday but the days I can I try to do so and most times I do not get to eat breakfast at the breakfast appropriate hours which is said to be between 7-9am.

Breakfast does not have to be like what we see in movies, a table full of so many varieties of sumptuous looking meals. it just has to be something to give you a little energy to get your day started right.

For me, my typical breakfasts are things like oatmeal, smoothies, brown bread toast, eggs, some high fiber cereals, fruits, yoghurts etc. I try to have a little carbohydrate in the morning because like we were taught carbohydrates are energy giving food, now eating carbs for breakfast helps give you the energy and also provides you the opportunity to burn off the calories throughout your activities during the day.

Breakfast should not have to be stressful to prepare because its morning and if you are working or going to school or whatever you do not have the hours to spend in the kitchen just to make breakfast. So the following are my personal favorite easy and fast breakfast options that I enjoy when I do have breakfast.

  • Oatmeal: now be it freshly cooked oatmeal or overnight oats I just love oatmeal a lot. My favorite way of eating oatmeal is cooking a little quantity that I can finish and having chopped apples or sliced bananas and sprinkles of cinnamon. Most times I do not add milk or cream or any kind of sweeteners to it, I just love to have it like that. Everyone knows I love my oatmeal.
  • Eggs and brown bread toast: now this is another favorite of mine; be it omelet, scrambled, or just simply hard boiled. Eggs are definitely my go to breakfast when I’m not having oatmeal, and most times I love to have just egg whites.

    All I do is whisk 2 egg whites, (or one egg white and one egg with the yolk) add a little salt and pepper, scramble it in olive oil and have it plain with a cup of tea. Sometimes I love to add a slice of brown bread or wheat bread to it just to get me a little fuller.
  • Cereals and yogurt: Not only is this a good breakfast option, I also like to have it at other times of the day as it’s easy to prepare., I love my high fiber cereals and granolas with unsweetened yogurts. All I do is pour some yogurts in a bowl or cup and add my healthy cereals (oatmeal or granola) to it, sometimes I like to top it off with fruits and sometimes not. So easy but so yummy and healthy.

  • Smoothies: This I love to have when I have a few fruits and veggies at home just sitting around. I like to try to make sure there is a citrus fruit and a source of green in my smoothies (not always of course) so I always make sure to have the juice of an orange, lemon or grapefruit and also spinach or vegetable (ugwu leaf).

    Just throw in 3 or 4 different fruits in the blender and breakfast is ready, sometimes I like to add whey protein powder just to up my protein intake for the day.

These are some of my favorite go to healthy breakfast options that I enjoy a lot and that I believe helps keep me fit and healthy, not to forget to mention I never go a day without my cup of green tea with my breakfast and even if I’m not having breakfast I will still have my cup of green tea.
